The Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) has recommended Virat Kohli for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, while Ajinkya Rahane has been nominated for Arjuna Award.

This is the first time in four years that the BCCI has given name of its cricketers for the prestigious award, after nominating Rahul Dravid in 2012.

Virat Kohli has already received Arjuna Award in 2013. He is in strong contention of receiving the award after scoring heavily throughout the season, and also guiding India to World T20 semifinals.

So far, only two cricketers, batting legend Sachin Tendulkar and India’s most successful captain MS Dhoni, have been conferred with Khel Ratan.

Rahane, meanwhile, is in line for receiving the Arjuna Award after scoring consistently in all three formats – one-days, Tests and T20s – of the game.

“We have received the recommendations from the BCCI,” an official of the sports ministry said. “Their names will be sent to the awards selection committee.”

The winner of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, along with the citation, will receive a 7.5 lakh rupee as a prize money, while the Arjuna Award winner will get a citation and a prize of 5 lakh rupees.
