In 2013, during the semifinals of of ICC Champions Trophy, India vs Sri Lanka, MS Dhoni handed over his gloves and pads to Dinesh Karthik and went ahead with bowling. And he trapped Mahela Jayawardene leg before wicket.
However, Jayawardene reviewed the decision and it got overturned by the third umpire. Before the 23rd over of India vs Sri Lanka, Dhoni handed over his gloves and pads to Dinesh Karthik and warmed up during Jadeja’s over.
Then he went to bowl his medium-pace in the 24th over of the match. Jayawardene was given leg-before wicket on Dhoni’s second ball but the decision got overturned due to an inside edge.
Dhoni finished with economical figures of 0/17. Wicket or no wicket, crowd couldn’t stop cheering for Dhoni. It was not for the first time that he had bowled in his ODI career.
Previously, during the 2009 edition of Champions Trophy, he finished with figures of 1/14 in two overs, sending Travis Dowlin back to the pavilion. We may never know why MS Dhoni turned to bowling; this just added a new skill to his cricketing repertoire.
