The most exciting sight on a cricket field is a well-directed yorker. It cheats the best of the batsman and hits the wicket. India’s pace attack, which counted amongst the best in the world cricket, has the likes of Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah.
But, what is the key to a perfect yorker? “You start by bowling full tosses in practice and gradually bring the height down until you start hitting the base of the stumps,” Bharat Arun said. “The bowler has to find the release point that works best for him while bowling yorkers. It’s a lot about the feel.”

Arun has keenly observed Yadav’s yorkers and said, “There was a phase when his yorkers were going down the leg-side. Then we got him to aim outside the off-stump and his action ensured the ball was now hitting the stumps.”
“Umesh is very strong and quick,” he also pointed out. “He also has a yorker that swings in late. This makes his yorkers particularly dangerous.”
Arun noted the variety of yorkers Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowls. He also pointed out his quicker ball and the slower one. According to Arun, Bhuvneshwar uses the crease particularly well while sending down the yorkers.
India’s weakest spot in bowling has often been ‘death’. This transformation has been remarkable.
