After facing fourth successive defeat in the ODI series, captain MS Dhoni has taken one for the team, saying that he should have finished off the match in the fourth one-dayer in Canberra.

India were slumped to a shocking defeat at the Manuka Oval, when they lost the game from a winning position, despite centuries from Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli.

The lower middle-order batsmen of the Indian team couldn’t finish the game, after the departure of both Dhawan and Kohli, as India found themselves short by 25 runs at the end.

Captain Dhoni defended his already under-performing bowling unit and the batsmen after the match and took the responsibility of the loss over his shoulders.

“This was one game we should have batted much better,” Dhoni said. “I’ll take responsibility, I should have carried on but I got out.. There was a bit of pressure on the youngsters.”

“International cricket is all about pressure, you think about the right shot,” he added. “You realise you have to take a bit more time and take the game slightly to the end.”

Dhoni praised both Dhawan and Kohli for their superb show with the bat, and said they batted “majestically” while taking India close to the win.

“Rohit batted very well with Shikhar. And Dhawan and Kohli batted majestically,” Dhoni said. “In the last five years, we have not had a fixed bowling line up other than the spinners.”
