India World Cup Squad: Murali Vijay was also in the race

Murali Vijay

Murali Vijay, who has impressed one and all in the ongoing Test series against Australia, couldn’t find a place in the World Cup team, which was announced by the selection committee on Tuesday.

But if sources in the BCCI are to be believed, Vijay’s name was considered in the meeting and finally it came to a point when it was toss-up between Vijay and all-rounder Stuart Binny. “There was a deliberation on whom to pick between Vijay and Binny,” the source said.

It was also reliably learnt that Vijay was in the contention for being an extra batsman in the squad after the selectors fixed their minds on the regular seven. But the team also needed one extra pacer who could play the role of a batsman in the lower-middle order.

And, that is where Binny raced ahead of Vijay. “This was a tough choice that the selectors had to make,” the source revealed.

On being asked as to how seriously the selectors considered Yuvraj Singh for a place in the 15-member squad, the sources said: “Yuvraj’s form in domestic cricket makes it evident that he is not over as a cricketer. If there is any injury concern in the already selected team before and during the World Cup, the selectors could look outside the 30-probable list and in that case, Yuvraj could be considered,” he said.
