Smith, who has been in sublime form in the series, continued his run-scoring streak and made fourth century of the series to join the likes of Don Bradman and Jacques Kallis. He hammered the Indian bowlers all over the park and played a captain’s knock.

Chris Rogers, Shane Watson, Shaun Marsh and Joe Burns scored fifties for Australia and stitched crucial partnerships in the middle. They never allowed the Indian team to come back into the encounter and kept the touring party at bay.

Indian bowlers got no assistance from the deck but they didn’t help themselves as well and dropped crucial catches. Still, Mohammed Shami managed to pick a fifer, while Umesh Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin took one wicket apiece.

Brad Haddin and Ryan Harris also played cameos towards the end as Australia declared their innings on 572/7 in the post-tea session. Harris, in particular, scored a nine-ball 25 to enable Smith declared the innings a couple of overs early.

India, on a flat deck, were off to a difficult start and lost in-form Murali Vijay in the first over of the innings. Vijay (0) chased Mitchell Starc’s ball angling away and edged it to wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, who made no mistake in taking a fine catch.

Starc and Ryan Harris tested both KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma with tight line and length but the Indian pair survived the phase and managed to make a fighting stand of the second wicket.

Rohit (40 not out) took the initiative in the partnership, while Rahul (31 not out), playing his second match, overcome the nerves and saw the stumps while opening the innings. India finished the day at 71/1, 501 runs behind Australia in the first innings.
