Rohit Sharma is as good as anyone in the world cricket today. Nearly a year ago, the Mumbai batsman had a very good start to 2015. He cracked a brilliant 138 but couldn’t help India to secure a win in a tri-series match against Australia in Melbourne.
A year later, Rohit was again at it. This time, he made an unbeaten 171 off 163 balls. His knock powered India to make 309 at the loss of three wickets in 50 stipulated overs.
He also struck seven sixes and 13 fours to stamp authority over the hosts. Ultimately, it was Rohit’s presence in the middle that buoyed India to make over 90 runs in last 10 overs of the Indian innings.
Like last year’s first match against Australia, India again won the toss and opted to bat first. But unlike last year, they were off to a very steady start this time in Perth.
The only hiccup was opener Shikhar Dhawan not getting runs. But Rohit and Virat Kohli made full use of the Australian inexperienced attack by exploiting every bit of it.
Both Rohit and Virat played on-the-rise drives, pull and hook shots and almost toyed with the Aussies attack. They also shared a crucial 207 run stand for the second wicket.
Virat (91 off 97 balls; 9X4 1X6) was unlucky to have missed his hundred, which he fully deserves. He got out just when he could have played a little slower to get his hundred.
But he decided to play an ambitious shot by stepping out of his crease off James Faulkner. Till the time he was batting, he was in complete control of things like Rohit.
Without taking much from the Indian batsmen, the Australian bowlers were quite generous towards the visiting team. They bowled short, wide and half-volleys in almost every over to allow the Indians to free their arms.
When skipper MS Dhoni, one of the best finishers of the game, who promoted up the order after Virat’s dismissal, took made full use of the last few overs of the Indian innings. It was a perfect and quite a memorable batting display by the Indian team, which will be remembered for a long!
