Last year around this time, India were preparing for the 2015 World Cup in Australia. Besides playing a tri-series, the team management was trying a few things before the world extravaganza.
Indian captain MS Dhoni opened the bowling attack with Stuart Binny and even tried a few experiments in the batting order.
A few who questioned the tactics of the management later realised how the Men in Blue were just going through the motions and saving their energy levels for the World Cup.
Clearly, the tri-series was a burden on the team, but Dhoni being Dhoni kept things under the wrap and quietly went ahead with his duties and when the World Cup began, India were in full flow.
They not only began the campaign with a bang by winning their initial league matches, but also announced to the world that they were indeed a serious title contender.
However, all hope came crushing down when India lost the semifinal match against Australia. The 2011 World champions were beaten in all departments of the game by the hosts.
A few theories were floated and one of them was how the team had peaked early. Then, the batsmen were blamed and how the fast bowlers failed to live up to the expectations in a big game on a pitch that suited them.
India were brave enough to move on from the 2015 World Cup upset. Now that the team has entered a new phase and looking forward to start the new year with a high again in Australia — they are not looking to be different.
Dhoni’s men are looking to be outstanding. With the World T20 not too far away, they are confident that the ODI and T20 series against Australia will make the team better than before.
The track record of the Indian team in Australia is not too bad. They may not have come as the top team against their rivals, but there has always been a semblance of fight against a highly competitive Aussie side. Therefore, the expectations would be the same — with a hope that the indomitable spirit of the team rules the roost.
