Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar has lashed out on critics of MS Dhoni, saying that the Captain Cool is still Team India’s number one finisher, and there is no need to make him a scapegoat of team’s recent losses.

MS Dhoni has come under scrutiny after India lost the T20 series, and then the 1st ODI against South Africa by a slender of margin at the Green Park Stadium.

Sunil Gavaskar defended MS Dhoni saying it is not right to point fingers on Dhoni, who is Team India’s most successful captain, and has steered the team to various triumphs.

“Mahendra Singh Dhoni is still India’s No. 1 finisher,” Sunil Gavaskar said. “Obviously, as you get old your powers get less but that is the case with every profession and not just sports. Whenever there is a loss, we like to find a scapegoat and today the Indian captain is being made that, which is not right.”

“Please don’t point fingers at someone who has brought so many laurels to the country over the years,” he added. “If there is one area where the Indian team has to improve, it is the bowling.”

Sunil Gavaskar pointed out that India need to get their bowling combinations right and learn the art of bowling in the death overs, as they were clobbered by South Africa in the tour so far.

“Bowling is a big worry for the Indian team in the current situation. Our bowlers got hit for 100-odd runs in the last 10 overs,” Sunil Gavaskar said. “It was sad to see that the bowlers, who have spent so much time with the Indian team were not confident in the death overs.”

“I can understand that a yorker may go fuller, but if someone is bowling length balls that are getting clobbered into the stands then it seems that you are not ready to learn.”
