Is it time for IPL to have referral system in place?

Umpires IPL

The umpiring in the IPL is going from bad to worse, if the words of some of the franchisee officials are to be believed. They are of the opinion that time has come to bring in the referral system to ensure bad decisions given by umpires are avoided.

Outrightly, they are not undermining the performances of the umpires in the richest cricket league of the world. Their suggestion is only to make IPL umpiring standards better than what it is today

The teams also understand that it’s humanly impossible to get all the decisions right for any umpire in middle of so much pressure and in front of excessively loud fans. But with too much riding on every team, a mechanism to determine more correct decisions is what they are looking at.

Neither the teams haven’t discussed the referral system among themselves nor the IPL governing council has taken the issue officially, but a certain section in the league is already batting for a wind of change.

When Drcricket7 spoke to some of the IPL teams, they admitted that referrals will only make the league better and it will only help the existing system immensely.

“The teams are already talking about it but no one has raised the issue so far. It’s going to make IPL more accurate,” a franchisee official who didn’t wish to be named told Drcricket7.

When a top IPL official was asked if a referral system could ever work for IPL, he said: “The technical committee will have to take a call on this if referral needs to come into the system or not. The IPL can’t decide that independently.”

He also made it clear that if the franchises demand for a referral system to be introduced into IPL, the governing council will surely look into it.
