Harmanpreet Kaur on Becoming Social Media Celebrity

Harmanpreet Kaur represents the new breed of women cricketers. She is an on-field superstar and talks ‘hashtag’ language of the internet generation. She will soon be the first Indian woman to play in the Women’s Super League.

Woman cricketer’s cannot be understated, as they have great impact on the social media. Mithali Raj, earlier had only 3000 followers on twitter but after start of the tournament, her followers have gone past 50,000.

Similarly, Smriti Mandhana has 30,000 followers and Kaur has 20,000 followers on Twitter. The International Cricket Council’s digital media team has done a tremendous job with their match highlights.

“Whenever you get time you are looking at your phone and social media,” Harmanpreet pointed out. “You can see the clips of the players. Family and old friends who don’t follow cricket that much, they are giving their views on cricket. Some of my school friends who have never watched cricket are sending us their wishes.”

She said that the development is positive and recalled those times when she had to call his coach to tell him about the day. But times have changed and now everything is available on the social media.
