Should the Indian cricket board (BCCI) appoint two coaches for the Test and ODI teams separately, it may be a good idea to tap former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming.

Drcricket7 was the first website to report that Fleming could be a choice for the Indian job if he agrees. At least, there were a few of the BCCI working committee members who believed so and had told Drcricket7 that “Fleming is the best choice for India”.

Incidentally, Fleming was offered to coach India previously. He had declined the offer then by saying that he had a young family to look after and was happy serving the Chennai Super Kings as a coach.

But with an uncertainty looming large on CSK’s participation in the IPL for next two years, this is the best opportunity for BCCI to approach Fleming again and make an offer before any IPL team does it.

If not on a full-time basis, Stephen Fleming could be inducted in the ODI and T20 formats for his rapport with captain MS Dhoni. If BCCI still wishes to continue with Ravi Shastri, he could be given charge of the Test team along with Virat Kohli.

Officially, the cricket advisory committee of the BCCI will be looking to meet before a long South African series starts at home. In this meeting, the board secretary Anurag Thakur will be taking suggestions from three stalwarts of the game — Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman.

Everyone will have suggestions and names like Ricky Pointing, Andy Flower, John Wright and Tom Moody could be discussed. But somehow, Fleming is the man to guide India to the next World T20 Champions, which India will be hosting for the first time. Perhaps he may be ready to take on the job on a part-time basis.
