Due to the falling health of Jagmohan Dalmiya, there were murmurs about his elevation to an ornamental post – the patron in chief of the BCCI – from the post of president.

Some in the board agreed with the proposal floated by an influential Union Minister who met Jagmohan Dalmiya days before he passed away on Sunday while the others questioned if this proposal was feasible or not. But the Dalmiya family squashed all the rumours.

His son Abhishek categorically stated that his father was improving and would be in the best of health to take all the decision in the board. Unfortunately that day didn’t arrive.

Dalmiya succumbed to a massive heart attack. His death at a city hospital in Kolkata took everyone by surprise. There was not a single stake holder of the game who wasn’t in a state of shock.

And then, within minutes questions were being raised: Who is going to take over the BCCI president? Who is going to be the new boss of the Cricket Association of Bengal?

Before the BCCI president bit comes up for discussion, the local battle on who is going to succeed Dalmiya has taken some interesting turns. In other words, CAB is waging a political battle in days to come to decide the next CAB chief.

Besides former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, who is the CAB joint-secretary, there are others who have already thrown their hat into the ring. But as far as the post of BCCI president is concerned, the battle lines are interestingly drawn.

BCCI already have got suggestion from a senior member of the Union Cabinet to appoint the next boss on the basis of consensus. If his advice is followed, IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla could be the next BCCI president.

He is someone who is acceptable to all, possibly, from Sharad Pawar to N Srinivasan. If there isn’t any consensus, BCCI is surely heading for another election this AGM.

Not to be forget that this was the same Union Minister who suggested Dalmiya’s name for the BCCI president post in the March AGM earlier this year. For now, the vice-president from the East Zone is the interim president till the BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur calls for a general body meeting!
