There have been a lot of talks lately about the exclusion of Cheteshwar Pujara from the playing XI of the first two Tests against Sri Lanka, but it seems skipper Virat Kohli is all set to draft him into the XI.
Virat Kohli, who has been under scrutiny for not playing Cheteshwar Pujara, hinted that the Saurashtra batsman might open batting with KL Rahul in the 3rd Test.
“I mean, looking at these conditions, the reason behind getting someone like Karun Nair in is we can make Pujara open,” Virat Kohli said. “He is pretty solid, and with the new-ball he has opened in the sub-continent before.”
“I remember a couple of Tests where he has opened for India. That was the whole idea behind it. Really delighted to have him (Karun Nair) in the squad.”
“But, the idea behind it was getting Pujara to open along with Rahul and then that gives us even more batting options to play around with.”
“If we had 3-4 Tests, then you obviously have to think of a proper opener. I feel Pujara has done the job in the past, and we are very confident he will be able to do the job in the next game.”
The three-match Test series between India and Sri Lanka is currently locked at one game apiece, as the final game of the series would be a series decider.
India lost the 1st Test from a winning position, while registered a comprehensive win over Sri Lanka in the 2nd Test.
