Team India skipper MS Dhoni has been named the captain of the new Indian Premier League (IPL) franchisee, Rising Pune Supergiants.
Sanjiv Goenka, team owner Rising Pune Supergiants, was confident that MSD would replicate his international and IPL success with his team in forthcoming season.
“I welcome Dhoni as the captain of Rising Pune Supergiants for the 2016 season. He has always been a phenomenal leader for teams that he has represented including the Indian side.”
“His track record in both domestic and International arenas have been remarkable,” Goenka said. “I firmly believe he will lead our team extremely well on and off the field.”
The Rising Pune Supergiants had added five players – Dhoni, Steve Smith, Faf du Plessis, Ajinkya Rahane and Ravichandran Ashwin – in the IPL draft.
Apart from Dhoni, the team also has du Plessis and Smith, who are captains of their respective national teams. Goenka said the Indian captain is the best choice for the captaincy role.
“We have a team of leaders, one that should excel. Yes, we have three captains but Dhoni was the best choice,” Goenka said.
“Right now the focus is only on 2016 and the team building. That’s why we named Dhoni as the captain.”
