Shikhar Dhawan Creates Competition for Opening Slot

Shikhar Dhawan has created serious competition for the opening slot. He scored a scorching 190 in the 1st Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. Dhawan has effectively filled the void created by Murali Vijay’s injury.

Dhawan’s success has put the team management on the spot of bother. It also remains to be seen if such a strong performance from Dhawan upfront on a flat deck should count much or not.

This is, of course, one last time that India would be playing a Test series in the sub-continent. Their next assignments are against countries like South Africa, England, Australia and New Zealand.

These series away from Asia would be the real test for a batsman like Dhawan. But while discussing the possibility of India’s performance away from the sub-continent, no one is discrediting Dhawan’s ton.

It still takes a lot to go out there and score a hundred in Test cricket on whichever track the match is played. From the fans perspective, it’s always exciting when there is an equal contest between bat and ball.

In the past, many India batsmen have done well in countries like South Africa, England, Australia and New Zealand, but not many of their performances have translated into India winning series consistently.

So it’s important that big knocks from Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara continue even away from Asian countries.
