Speedster Mitchell Johnson to get limited playing-time before World Cup opener

Just more than two weeks remaining before the commencement of the World Cup and speedster Mitchell Johnson will get only three games to get back into the rhythm before Australia’s first match against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Johnson has been out of the Australian team owing to a hamstring injury, which is sustained after the Boxing Day Test against India. He, since then, has missed four one-dayers and a Test match.

The Australian bowling spearhead was declared fit for the Sydney ODI against India, but skipper George Bailey opted to provide more recovery time to Johnson, keeping the World Cup in mind.

“What’s really pleasing at the moment, and this is in all formats, is the depth we’ve got and the way guys can seamlessly come in from outside the squad and immediately start performing,” Bailey said. “I think it just comes down to having really clear plans within that group.”

This give Johnson just three games, including two practice matches and a tri-series final, to get back into the rhythm before the tournament opener on February 14.

Australia are set to play the tri-series final at WACA on February 1, while they will face India (February 8) and the UAE (February 11) in the warm-up matches before the World Cup.
