There were two thrillers on the same day. The first one saw the Kolkata Knight Riders beating the Delhi Daredevils at the Feroz Shah Kotla. In the second game managed to put the fans on the edge of their seats.
The defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad stunned Kings XI Punjab at home. However, both the thrillers had one thing common – the top performers were medium pacers.
For KKR, if Nathan Coulter-Nile was picked ahead of the top scorers of his team because of those three crucial wickets that he grabbed against Delhi. Hyderabad’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar too had a special day.
He picked up five wickets in the match against the Kings and delivered one of the best spells of the IPL 2017. In total, Bhuvneshwar bowled four stipulated overs with 15 dot balls and gave away only two boundaries.
Bhuvi literally ran through Punjab’s batting, alongwith Rashid Khan. So what was special about Bhuvneshwar’s spell? He mixed his deliveries very smartly, bowled yorkers to perfection and also moved the ball effectively.
With the Champions Trophy scheduled to be held in England where it would assist swing bowlers like Bhuvneshwar Kumar, these IPL performances are only adding to his confidence level.
Bhuvneshwar has also proved a point that an ability to bowl fast isn’t everything. Medium-pace bowling isn’t about pace at all. It’s about control and most important the ability to swing the ball.
If a bowler like him can’t swing the ball, he would also become very ordinary. Even raw pace can’t compensate swing. Bhuvneshwar too understood this dynamics and has adapted well to emerge as one of the top-most bowlers in India.
