Will BCCI Message To PCB On Indo-Pak Cricket Hurt India?

Clouds of uncertainty over series between India and Pakistan.
Clouds of uncertainty over series between India and Pakistan.

If the India-Pakistan cricket series is officially called off tomorrow, will it lead to a strained relationship between the two nations? The Pakistan cricket board is vexed about the fact that India isn’t serious enough to resume cricketing ties and also bringing in politics into the sport. But India is also helpless and chose not to take a step forward without a stable diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The PCB may continue to cry foul. The top PCB officials may not hesitate to say that this uncertainty over the proposed India-Pakistan series isn’t good for the game. But there isn’t much that PCB chairman Shahryar Khan and men could do. They have no other option other than becoming a silent spectator.

So, who will blink first? No one seems to know that. Yes, there is a section in the BCCI who are of the opinion that the India-Pakistan relations could be affected if things continue in this fashion. But they can’t do anything about it till the time the BCCI leadership takes a fresh stand on the India-Pakistan cricket.

In July, BCCI had warned Pakistan of suspending the cricket ties till the time the security of the Indians is compromised. This is a departure from the earlier stand of the BCCI. In fact, BCCI had never done this so directly.

In the past, there have been numerous uncertainties over the series, but BCCI always kept its counterpart in assuring state and with a hope that the series would happen at some point. This year, the response of the Indian board has been an exception.

As if, there is no fear of a bad rapport between the two countries at the ICC level. But it’s more or less certain that the leadership of the Indian board will have to address the issue at some point, if not today.

Not to forget that the cricketing ties between India and Pakistan have had their ups and downs in the half century since the two countries first met on the field in October 1952. But there is little doubt that cricket ties between the two neighbours have been in such serious jeopardy as they are now.
