Sri Lanka sent the likes of Brendon McCullum, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor packing inside 20 overs and left New Zealand reeling at 93/5 no one would have hoped the Black Caps will put on a fight, leave alone winning the contest.

But, the hosts not only managed to put a mammoth 361-run target in front of the Islanders but also managed to clinch the encounter by 108 runs at the University Oval, Dunedin, courtesy a magnificent sixth wicket stand between Luke Ronchi and Grant Elliot.

Elliot and Ronchi added 267 runs for the sixth wicket and propelled the Black Caps to a colossal total. Ranchi made an unbeaten 99-ball 170, while Elliot finished on 104 not out and also chipped in with a couple of wickets.

Chasing 361, the Lankan Lions never looked like in the hunt of getting close to the total, despite a century from opener Tillakaratne Dilshan. Lanka lost its last five wickets in just over 25 runs and were bundled for 252 in 43.4 overs.
