The story of the fourth Test was no different from the previous rubbers in the series as the Indian bowlers failed to make any impression, again, and were hammered by the Australian batsmen at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Tuesday.

Openers David Warner and Chris Rogers completely outplayed the Indian team by making a 200-run stand and thrashing the bowlers all over the park. Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were largely ineffective on a flat deck.

There were a few chances that came India’s way but they failed to cling on to them and were put on the backfoot as the game progressed. Ravichandran Ashwin, meanwhile, managed to create pressure from one end but others leaked runs from other end.

India, however, picked a couple of quick wickets in the post-lunch session by getting Warner (101) and Rogers (95) in a space of three runs. But, till then Australia were in total control, with Shane Watson and Steve Smith at the crease.

Ashwin provided the breakthrough when he got Warner, while Shami castled Rogers when he was caught in two minds and a straight ball from the Indian pacer disturbed the timber. Rogers again missed out on a well-deserved century.

Meanwhile, after losing two quick wickets, Australia recovered through Steve Smith and Shane Watson. They made an unbeaten 144-run stand for the third wicket and helped Australia reach 348/2 at stumps on Day 1 of the 4th Test.

Smith and Watson were never troubled by the Indian bowlers as they failed to create enough pressure from either ends. Watson, despite starting the innings slowly, managed to get his touch back and scored a well-compiled fifty, while Smith also made a half-century.

India, however, got an opening in the penultimate ball of the innings when Yadav managed to get a healthy edge off Watson’s bat. The ball went to flying to first slip, but Ashwin failed to grab it and that pretty much summed up the day for India on the field.
