Unfair to compare MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, says former skipper

MS Dhoni & Virat KohliSince Virat Kohli has taken over Test captaincy from Mahendra Singh Dhoni, there has been a strong urge of compering the duo, but former India skipper Sourav Ganguly feels that it is not fair to draw a comparison between them.

MS Dhoni is India’s most successful skipper in both Tests and ODIs, while Kohli is yet to register a win as Test skipper. Kohli led India in two Tests against India and was brilliant with the bat but wasn’t too convincing as a captain.

Kohli led India in the first Test at Adelaide Oval, which the touring party lost in the final session, while his second Test as skipper in Sydney ended in a draw. The Delhi-born, however, was brilliant with the bat and scored four centuries in the series.

“There will be a strong urge to compare Kohli and Dhoni,” Ganguly said. “I don’t think the two can be compared and it would be unfair to do so as well. Kohli has got the job now and it is his for the near foreseeable future.”

“He has got all the attributes for leadership and I think he will do well because he is aggressive and wants to win all the time,” he added. “He will lead with passion and it will show on the field. And he will get better with experience and grow into this role.”

After the Melbourne Test, which ended in a draw, Dhoni decided to retire from Tests. Kohli was appointed the skipper of the Test side, but MS Dhoni will continue to lead India in the limited-overs format, including the forthcoming World Cup.
