Sangakkara’s record-hundred fails to put Sri Lanka over the line against Australia

Sri Lanka displayed a brave batting batting display against Australia, but despite Kumar Sangakkara’s record hundred, they failed to upset the hosts at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Australia posted a mammoth 376 on a flat SCG deck, courtesy maiden hundred from Glenn Maxwell, who become the second-fastest centurion after Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien.

The hosts got heavy contributions from the middle-order, while Brad Haddin also played a cameo to propel Australia past 350-run mark. Steven Smith, Michael Clarke and Shane Watson made fifties.

Sri Lanka also tried their best to chase the total but they only managed to score 64, Sangakkara scored his third successive World Cup ton, while Dilshan, Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews also made good contributions.

The Islanders were unlucky as just when they were going neck-and-neck, Chandimal had to leave the field owing to a hamstring injury. From that point Sri Lanka lost the plot and were bundled for 312 in 47 overs.
