Ranji Trophy Round-up: Virender Sehwag smashes century against Haryana

Virender Sehwag was batting on 147 at the end of first day’s play against Haryana while Kedar Devdhar lifted Baroda with a 146-run knock. Mumbai captain Suryakumar Yadav scored 135 while Team Rajasthan’s Pranay Sharma too was amongst the century makers on Day 1 of the fifth round of the Ranji Trophy 2014-15 season. Rishi Dhawan claimed a fifer while Karnataka captain Vinay Kumar picked a four-for.

Bengal vs Tamil Nadu: Dinesh Karthik’s 92 helped Tamil Nadu to 208/5 on Day 1. Ashoke Dinda who accounted for the wicketkeeper-batsman also claimed two more while S Sarkar and LR Shukla picked a wicket each. At stumps, R Prasanna was batting on 35 with R Sathish on 10.

Karnataka vs J&K: The Vinay Kumar-led defending champions skittled J&K out for 160 and were 123/5 at stumps. Vinay picked 4/37 while Stuart Binny took 3/37 and A Mithun claimed two wickets. However, Karnataka too lost their openers with 14 runs on the board and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. While Ram Dayal accounted for the openers, Mohammed Mudhasir took 3/29. At stumps, Robin Uthappa coming in at No 5 was batting on 37 with CM Gautam (14*).

Uttar Pradesh vs Baroda: Kedar Devdhar’s 146 and half-centuries by opener Saurabh and top-order bat Aditya Waghmode helped Baroda to a respectable total despite the middle-order caving in to UP. Irfan Pathan was batting on 15 with P Shah on five at the end of day’s play.

Haryana vs Delhi: Left reeling on 40/3, Delhi were lifted to 278/7 by Virender Sehwag. The veteran batsman was batting on 147 when play ended for the day. The rest of the line-up barring Rajat Bhatia (72) failed to chip in to the total. At stumps, Sehwag was batting with Sumit Narwal (2*). Joginder Sharma claimed 3/39 and was complemented by the rest of the attack on keeping Delhi on their toes.

Team Rajasthan vs Punjab: Pranay Sharma’s 118 not out lifted Team Rajasthan to 295/4 on the first day after being asked to bat by Punjab. Although the hosts lost Vineet Saxena and Robin Bist early the rest of the line-up contributed substantially. While Sharma anchored the innings, Ashok Menaria contributed 65 while R Bishnoi made 67. At stumps, Puneet Yadav was batting on 25 with the opener.

Saurashtra vs Maharashtra: Electing to bat first, Maharashtra posted 320 for six on the first day against Saurashtra in Rajkot. Harshad Khadiwale made 67 while Rohit Motwani scored 70. At stumps Ankit Bawne was batting on 52 with Shrikant Mundhe on three. Kamlesh Makvana picked three wickets while D Jadeja took two after S Tyagi sent back opener Swapnil Gugale with 32 runs on the board.

Andhra Pradesh vs Jharkhand: Opting to field, Andhra ran through Jharkhand’s middle and lower-order to leave them on 215 for nine at the end of day’s play. P Munda and Ishan Kishan put up a 77-run opening stand but the team were not able to capitalise on the decent start. While Munda departed for 63, Kishan made 41 and Surabh Tiwary had scored 45 before being run out. CV Stephan claimed 3/43 while K Harish took two and DP Vijaykumar and D Shivkumar chipped in with a wicket each.

Assam vs Services: Assam’s Arup Das and Krishna Das claimed four and three wickets respectively to leave Services on 102/8 at stumps. Deepak Punia was batting on 11 with A Sakuja yet to open his account when play ended for the day.

Himachal Pradesh vs Kerala: The Rishi Dhawan-led HP attack wrapped -up Kerala’s innings for 196 after opting to bowl in Dharamsala. The pacer claimed 5/57 while B Sharma picked 3/37 and Vikramjeet Malik and P Jaswal chipped in with a wicket each. In reply, HP were 11 without loss at the end of day’s play.

Tripura vs Hyderabad: Anwar Ahmed and CV Milind picked five and three wickets respectively to bowl Tripura out for 184. M Ravi Kiran and Ashish Reddy chipped in with a wicket each after Hyderabad opted to field in Agartala. Tripura’s lower middle-order batsmen K Acharjee made 55 while MB Murasingh scored 44. In reply, Hyderabad were 116/1 at stumps with Akshath Reddy batting on 66 and Milind on one.
