England may not have Alistair Cook and Kevin Pietersen in the ranks now, but now Eoin Morgan looked to have taken over them by scoring a brilliant hundred against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground, after Aussie pacers ripped through their top-order.

Morgan stood tall for the England team, despite wickets falling from one end, and was not rattled and made his seventh century in the ODIs. England, however, were bundled inside 50 overs for 234 in 47.5 overs.

Ian Bell, who struck a magnificent century in the warm-up game, was the first to depart when he was trapped lbw by Starc in the very first ball of the innings. Starc again struck when he got James Taylor for a duck, two deliveries later.

England looked to build with Moeen Ali and Joe Root, but the latter was caught by Shane Watson in the slips off Pat Cummins. Ali, meanwhile, looked solid in the middle but was caught by Glenn Maxwell off James Faulkner at deep cover, after the departure of Root.

The touring party needed a partnership after losing their top-order, England skipper Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara tried to steady the ship but the latter was dismissed while cutting left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty.

Morgan and Jos Buttler, meanwhile, stitched a 67-run partnership for the sixth wicket, but Faulkner broke the partnership, just when things looked to be going England’s way.

After the departure of Buttler, Morgan made a small partnership with Chris Woakes, and then created a crucial 56-run partnership with Chris Jordan. The partnership between Woakes and Jordan helped England reach a competitive total.
