Joe Root and Moeen Ali continued their run-making form against India and helped England in owing the second session. He and Moeen Ali stitched an unbeaten 107-run partnership when the team was called on Day 1 in Rajkot.
Root struck his 24th Test fifty, as the Indians failed to pick any wicket post-lunch. At tea, England were 209/3 with Moeen batting at unbeaten 48, while Root (96 not out) is steering towards his century.

More than the partnership between Ali and Root, the injury of Mohammad Shami hurt them the most. Just at the stroke of tea India lost Shami owing to an injury. The hosts would be hoping it to be just a niggle, nothing more.
India could have had Root out just before the tea, but the umpire turned down a close leg-before shout. The Indian captain Virat Kohli took the review, but Root was lucky enough to have escaped that too.
