It turned out to be a classic Test cricket session, which witness some counterattacking batting and very good bowling. England batted brilliantly on a Rajkot wicket until Ravichandran Ashwin struck twice for the Indians.
India could have dominated the session, had they clinged on the chances that came their way with the new ball. England ended the first session at 102/3, with Root batting at 35.

Earlier, England elected to bat first and got a good start from Alastair Cook and debutant Haseeb Hameed. The opening pair put up a solid 47-run partnership, before Ravindra Jadeja trapped Cook (21) right in front.
Hameed (31) and Joe Root then started to build a partnership, but Ashwin found his rhythm to break the stand. The debutant seemed to have sound technique until the Indian off-spinner opened him up with a beauty.
Then Root and Ben Duckett played counterattacking cricket and added 26 runs. But, as soon as the partnership seemed to be gaining momentum, Duckett (13) edged Ashwin and Ajinkya Rahane took a sharp catch at the slip.
