The writing was on the wall. After an eventful opening day Test match against New Zealand in Indore, India gave enough indication that record books could tumble if Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane would continue to bat like Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman. And they did.

The fourth wicket stand between Kohli and Rahane was 11 runs short of breaking the Eden Garden’s record. The 2001 epic Test match had seen a stand of 376 runs between Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman. But the 365-run partnership of the Kohli-Rahane pair is also big in terms of numbers.

Of course, the likes of Kohli and Rahane didn’t have to face enormous pressure like Dravid and Laxman. But runs are runs and it doesn’t matter how it comes and who scores them. As long as runs are scored, any team will benefit. Therefore, India were again on the top on Day Two of the Indore Test.

Thanks to Kohli’s double hundred and his ability to join the elite club of the Indian captain’s double centurions club, which has names like MS Dhoni, Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar and Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi.

A lot of credit should also go to Rahane, who played a gem of a knock along with his Test captain. The Mumbai batsman was unfortunate to miss out on a chance to score a double hundred.

As they say this is just the starting and many more knocks are expected to come from both Kohli and Rahane’s bat.
