Team India director Ravi Shastri has informed that opener Murali Vijay has been ruled out of the 1st Test against Sri Lanka, slated to start from August 12 in Colombo.

Mural Vijay is suffering from a mild hamstring injury, which he picked during the Zimbabwe tour, owing to which he also missed the warm-up fixture in Sri Lanka.

To save Murali Vijay from any further niggle, the Indian team management decided to rest the opener for the 1st Test against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium.

Earlier, India Test skipper Virat Kohli had confidently said that Murali Vijay would be fit for the opening game against Sri Lanka, this however is not the case.

“No, I don’t see any issues with Vijay’s fitness,” Virat Kohli had said. “As far as I know, Vijay is almost 100% straightaway and I am sure he will be match fit even before the warm-up game.”

Murali Vijay is an in-form player, but India still have plenty of options for the opening slot, despite his absence from the playing XI.

KL Rahul, who played brilliant knocks in both innings in the warm-up match, would be opening the innings with Shikhar Dhawan in the 1st Test.

Interestingly, KL Rahul smashed a flowing century in the last Test he played for India against Australia in Sydney. He, however, missed the only Test played by India because of ill health.
