Dinesh Chandimal once again showed why he is tipped as Sri Lanka’s middle-order, as he led Islanders’ resistance by scoring a gritty fifty in the 1st Test in Dunedin.

Sri Lanka are still 234 runs short of New Zealand’s first innings total of 431, but with wickets in hand and Dinesh Chandimal in the middle, they are in for a fight.

Apart from Dinesh Chandimal, opener Dimuth Karunaratne also made a gritty fifty for Sri Lanka. He, however, was unfortunate to have not completed a well-deserved ton.

Full credit must be given to both Dimuth Karunaratne and Dinesh Chandimal for negotiating the new and old-ball pretty well, and keeping the likes of Trent Boult and Tim Southee at bay.

At stumps, Sri Lanka posted 197 for the loss of four wickets, with Dinesh Chandimal and Kithuruwan Vithanage batting for the visitors.

For New Zealand, Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner and Mitchell Santner took one wicket apiece.
