Cape Cobras prevail over Barbados Tridents in the Super Over

The Cape Cobras defeated the Barbados Tridents in the Super Over to complete a stunning victory in the Champions League T20 in Mohali on Friday. In the first Super Over of this year’s tournament, the Tridents managed to restrict the Cobras to just 11 runs, thanks to some fine bowling from pacer Ravi Rampaul.

Rampaul bowled quite well and didn’t allow Richard Levi and Dane Vilas to get going. Levi only managed two singles, while Vilas scored the only boundary of the over in the second ball. The 12 runs target looked achievable at one point of time, when Jonathan Carter smashed Sybrand Engelbrecht’s second ball for a four. But Engelbrecht bowled tightly as the Cobras walked away with all four points from the tie.

Earlier, Carter’s unbeaten century effort went in vain as the Tridents couldn’t close the game in the final over of the match. The Cobras required 13 to win in the final over, after a superb bowling effort from Rampaul, who only gave five runs in the penultimate over.

With 13 to win in the last over, it was always going to be a dice affair for both the teams. Skipper Rayad Emrit backed himself and bowled tight first five deliveries but a miss from wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich in the last ball cost them the match.

The Cobras needed three runs to win in the final ball and Engelbrecht hit the ball straight to Raymon Reifer at deep square leg. Reifer made no mistake in throwing the ball to Dowrich, who failed to collect the ball and Engelbrecht completed two runs.

It was a heartbreaking moment for Carter, who made an unbeaten 68-ball 111 and played an instrumental role in powering his team to 174 in 20 overs. Jeevan Mendis also bowled well for Tridents and took four wickets and played crucial role in derailing the Cobras.
