The Proteas were not at their best in the opening one-dayer, but came out all guns blazing in the following game to restrict Australia to a paltry total. Morkel was the wrecker-in-chief and finished with career-best figures and was supported by Dale Steyn from the other end.

After putting an impressive performance with the ball, the touring party would be aiming to improve their batting in the forthcoming tie. Despite not having scoreboard pressure, they lost seven wickets on ever improving WACA pitch.

“Game one – we were playing at about 60% of our capability, which wasn’t good enough,” Steyn said. “The other day we pulled it together with the ball and if we’re honest with ourselves we should have won by six or seven wickets.”

“But that’s the nature of the game… we’ll look at Perth and everything we did wrong we’ll try to make up for now,” he added.

Meanwhile, Josh Hazlewood also came out with a firing bowling spell and made the contest out of nowhere. He exploited the conditions and finished with a fifer – and showed with a bit more runs on the board the result could have been different.

The batsmen, however, after been hooped, heaved and tottered, can relax at the Manuka Oval. The pitch is expected to be a batting paradise and Aussie coach Darren Lehmann has termed it “ an absolute belter”.

“The wicket looks an absolute belter. Hopefully it’s high scoring and we get one more run than them,” Darren Lehmann said. “We’ve got a bit of info and intel from the NSW boys, because they’ve played here a bit. It’s a big ground, I’m pretty sure it’ll be high scoring.”
