The 1st Ashes Test loss seemed to have affected Australia so hard that they are not in a mood of sharing a drink with the hosts. England seamer James Anderson has revealed that Australia turned down Alistair Cook’s invitation of a post-match drink.

In recent time, teams generally share drinks after an end of a Test series, not after each Test match. Anderson, however, said his side shared drinks with New Zealand, despite losing the second Test against the Black Caps in Headingly.

“That’s their (the Australians) prerogative,” Anderson said. “After the New Zealand series, we had a beer after each game with them. We found that was quite an enjoyable thing, just to chew the fat after a hard Test. It didn’t matter whether we won or lost.”

“At Headingley (where England lost to end the series all square at 1-1), we still went into their dressing room and had a beer with them. It’s Cooky’s idea. He’s the captain, he went and asked them. We were all happy to do it. I don’t know why they (the Australians) didn’t come in.”

It is not difficult to understand why the Australian cricket team turned down the offer, after they were hammered inside four days in the 1st Ashes Test in Cardiff by 169 runs.

Australia are a competitive bunch and after beaten fair and square in the series opener, they would be aiming to even the five-match series at the Lord’s. So, refusing an invitation is no big deal seeing the competitive cricket played nowadays.

“I think there was talk of potentially having a drink after each Test,” England pacer Stuart Broad said. “But the modern way generally in the series I’ve played in is you have a beer after the series.”
