India’s obsession with foreign coaches may have ended for now with contract extension of Ravi Shastri as the team director till the World T20 Championship next year.

According to BCCI sources, the board was keen to get a full time foreign coach for the team after the 2015 World Cup ended, but zeroed in on the Indian panel after several deliberations.

“The Indian coach will rule the roost now. This is a good thing for India cricket. Ravi Shastri himself is happy with the panel of the Indian coach. The team has benefited a lot,” a BCCI source told Drcricket7 on Thursday.

The board mandarins were also keen to start a short-listing process with the high profile cricket committee, which included stalwarts like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman.

There were discussions on the dearth of choice for a full-time coach and how India have benefited under the tutelage of Shastri. The board also took a note of the change of attitude of the Indian team.

It’s also true that the board had left the door open for a foreign coach, but wasn’t convinced on how good he would be for the Indian team. “There were several candidates who were considered. But Shastri emerged as the best candidate,” a BCCI official added.
