Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane will be Virat Kohli’s deputy in the forthcoming West Indies series. The middle-order batsman was named the vice-captain of the Test side for the first time by the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI).

The Mumbai dasher had captained India against Zimbabwe last year in the limited-overs series. But, the five-day format is going to be a different ball game altogether for him.

“It is a good responsibility as a vice-captain and I love facing challenges and love taking responsibility,” Rahane said. “So it’s not pressure, not added pressure. I think responsibility will bring best out of me.”

Rahane has been in a superb touch across formats this season. He also scored heavily in Test matches. But, it will be the first time he will be playing Test cricket in the Caribbean.

“This is actually my second time to West Indies, first time I was with India A team, but with the Indian team it is my first time,” Ajinkya Rahane said. “I am looking forward and I have prepared myself really well.”

The Windies tour is starting July 21 with the first Test in Antigua. Prior to which, the Indian team will play a couple of practice matches to acclimatise themselves with the conditions.

India’s preparatory camp has already been started at Bangalore’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium under the supervision of newly-appointed head coach Anil Kumble.
