Speedster Lasith Malinga has stepped down from captaincy, and will be replaced by Angelo Mathews in the World T20, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) informed.

Malinga, who has been troubled by a knee injury for quite a long time now, will remain part of the 15-member squad for the marquee event.

The SLC also informed that Dinesh Chandimal will be Mathews’ deputy in the squad, also featuring Tillakaratne Dilshan, Nuwan Kulasekara & Lahiru Thirimanne.

“Angelo Mathews is going to be captain and Chandimal will be vice captain,” Mohan de Silva, secretary of SLC, told reporters in Colombo.

“Malinga will be in the squad,” he added. “He is only stepping down from the captaincy, but he has offered himself for selection after the 15th because he is undergoing some treatment here.”

Sri Lanka will open their cup campaign against a qualifier on March 17 in Kolkata, followed by game against West Indies, England and South Africa.

Sri Lanka World T20 2016 Squad: Angelo Mathews (c), Dinesh Chandimal (vc), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Shehan Jayasuriya, Lahiru Thirimanne, Milinda Siriwardana, Dasun Shanuka, Chamara Kapugedera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Dushmantha Chameera, Thisara Perera, Sachithra Senanayake, Rangana Herath, Lasith Malinga and Suranga Lakmal.
