Ranji Trophy Semifinal Round-up: Karnataka on top despite Mumbai’s resistance

Aditya Tare (98) led Mumbai’s resistance in a mammoth 445-run chase against Karnataka in Bengaluru. In the second Ranji Trophy semi-final Maharashtra were 110 for 1 at stumps in reply to Tamil Nadu’s 549. Here are the highlights at the end of third day’s play:

Karnataka vs Mumbai: Chasing 445, Mumbai dug in to end the third day with 277 for 6. Leading from the front, captain Aditya Tare posted a patient 98 off 207 balls before Sreenath Arvind forced and edge to the wicketkeeper. Abhimanyu Mithun, who was the pick of the Karnataka bowlers, removed Akhil Herwadkar in the morning and later in the session sent back Shreyas Iyer.

Iyer, the No. 3 batsman, had scored a brisk half-century before returning to the pavilion. Suryakumar Yadav played a patient knock to see off the first session. However, he was dismissed for 36 (off 119) by Mithun in the second session. Nikhil Patil, who then joined Siddhesh Lad, was removed by Vinay Kumar at stroke of tea leaving Mumbai on 237 for 5.

In the final session of the day as Lad continued to watchfully keep the innings alive, Wilkin Mota was castled by Shreyas Gopal for nine. Abhishek Nayar, who could not bat after injuring himself while fielding, walked in to join Lad and saw Mumbai through to stumps on Day 3. Lad was batting on 41 with Nayar on two at close of play on Friday evening.

Tamil Nadu vs Maharashtra: Maharashtra were trailing by 439 runs with nine wickets in hand at stumps. They lost Harshad Khadiwale with just 20 runs on board early in the innings in reply to TN’s first innings score of 549. But, opener S Gugale (56*) and Chirag Khurana (36*) took the team 110/1 until close of play on Day 3.

Earlier, TN lost their remaining five wickets for the addition of 120 runs. Anupam Sanklecha struck to remove the overnight batsmen, R Prasanna and Baba Indrajith, in the morning. And while M Rangarajan remained unbeaten on 67, Samad Fallah removed Aswin Crist, L Balaji was sent back by Khurana. Sanklecha then ran out P Parameswaran to bring curtains down on the TN innings.
