Ranji Trophy Round-up: Aushik Srinivas, Rahil Shah bowl Tamil Nadu to victory

Tamil Nadu were the first team to post a win in the second round of the premier multi-day domestic tournament. Pacer Amit Mishra (6/26) and Praveen Kumar (3/16) tipped the balance in UP’s favour in a scintillating day’s play against MP while Karnataka pushed Bengal on the back-foot in their own backyard.

Shardul Thakur claimed six after play resumed against Railways while Rush Kalaria led Gujarat’s attack against Odisha. Punjab’s Sandeep Sharma and S Kaul were among the wicket-takers in the round with five wickets each. Here are the highlights of the day:

Bengal vs Karnataka: Asked to follow-on, Bengal were trailing by 111 runs with nine wickets in hand at stumps on the third day in their backyard. After the visitors had posted 408, the Vinay Kumar-led attack bowled Bengal out for 251 earlier in the day. Sreenath Aravind claimed R Banerjee to give his team the first wicket of the day sent back two more later while the skipper too added two more to his tally of wickets. Abhimanyu Mithun picked two while Stuart Binny and Shreyas Gopal chipped in with a wicket each to wrap-up the hosts’ first innings. After enforcing the follow-on Aravind again accounted for Banerjee to leave the home team on 17/1. When play ended, Arindam Das (11*) and S Chatterjee (20*) had taken the team to 46/1.

J&K vs Tamil Nadu: Aushik Srinivas and Rahil Shah bowled Tamil Nadu to a 277-run win on the pen-ultimate day of the match. Powered by Abhinav Mukund’s 137, TN declared their second innings for 286/5 earlier in the day with a mammoth lead. Having set the Parvez Rasool-led side a 409-run target L Balaji set the ball rolling with the wicket of Adil Reshi. Shah and Srinivas then ran through the opposition line-up with clinical precision. Srinivas claimed 5/12 while Shah claimed 3/64. J&K opener, Shubham Khajuria who had shown his mettle against Mumbai in the previous game put up a resistance to score 60 off 87 balls before returning to the pavilion.

Madhya Pradesh vs Uttar Pradesh: Amit Mishra (6/26) and Praveen Kumar (3/16) skittled MP out for 63 earlier in the day. Both claimed two each of the top four batsmen without letting them open their accounts. Harpreet Singh was the only MP batsman to reach double-digits with 37 runs before he was castled by Mishra. At stumps, UP needed 98 runs to with six wickets in hand. Avesh Khan claimed 3/34 while S Mishra took 1/29 as UP finished the day on 82/4. Earlier, UP were bowled out for 180 runs in the first innings after resuming on 149/6 on the third day.

Railways vs Mumbai: Railways’ first innings which was halted on Day 1 on 25/2 resumed on the third morning. The hosts put together 242 before being bowled out by the Shardul Thakur-led Mumbai attack on Tuesday. Thakur claimed 6/59 while Javed Khan picked 2/52 and Badri Alam took one wicket. In reply, Mumbai were struggling on 24/3 at stumps. Bravish Shetty and Aditya Tare were set back for ducks while Hiken Shah (17*) and Suryakumar Yadav (2*) were still at the crease when play ended for the day.

Haryana vs Maharashtra: Chasing 208, Maharashtra were nine without loss at stumps on the pen-ultimate day of the match. Earlier in the day, Samad Fallah and Anupam Sanklecha ran through the top-half of the Haryana attack while Shrikant Mundhe claimed the lower half to bowl the hosts out for 176. Mundhe claimed 4/36 while Sanklecha and Fallah picked three and two wickets respectively. Chasing the stiff target, Harshad Khadiwale and Chirag Khurana had batted for five overs until play ended for the day.

Odisha vs Gujarat: Once again in the match, Rush Kalaria ran through the top half of Odisha’s batting line-up to end the day on 4/20. Off his four wickets he had sent back three batsmen for naught while Kushang Patel had sent back A Sarangi for a duck. They had reduced the hosts to 18/5 but captain A Mallick’s 90* with G Podder (36*) had taken Odisha to 143/5 at stumps. The home team was trailing by four runs with five wickets in hand in the second innings at the end of day’s play. Earlier, Gujarat were bowled out for 372 after resuming on 255/4 in the morning.

Vidarbha vs Punjab: Having claimed the remaining four Vidarbha wickets in the morning to bowl them out for 158, Punjab had extended their lead to 248 until stumps. Sandeep Sharma claimed the hosts lower order to help seize a first innings lead after Vidarbha resumed on 149/6. Sharma and S Kaul finished with five wickets each in the innings. Punjab then lost both openers early and were reeling on 7/2 but Jiwanjot Singh’s 65 and useful contributions by the middle-order has taken Punjab to 211/6 until play was called off.

Rajasthan vs Saurashtra: Saurashtra were trailing by 257 with seven wickets in hand at stumps with A Vasavada (56*) and D Chauhan (34*) in the middle. Earlier, Ashok Menaria’s unbeaten century after Vineet Saxena’s 118 had taken Rajasthan to 437/5 until they declared their innings.

Andhra vs Kerala: P Vijay Kumar-led Andhra attack bundled out Kerala for 129 in the second innings on the third day. The bowler claimed 5/33 while Stephan and A Bandaru picked two wickets each while Siva Kumar took one to bowl Kerala out on 78.1 overs. Chasing 218, Andhra were 55 without loss at stumps. KS Bharat was batting on 41 with DB Prashanth Kumar on 13 at the end of day’s play.

Assam vs Jharkhand: At 157/2 in the second innings at stumps, Assam were leading by 131 runs against Jharkhand. Earlier in the day, Jharkhand lost six wickets for the addition of 75 runs to their overnight score. Assam’s Dhiraj Goswami wrapped-up the tail to finish with 4/20. However, Jharkhand had secured a first innings lead as the match heads for a draw.

Hyderabad vs Goa: After Hyderabad declared their first innings on 567/7, Goa were 236/6 at stumps on the third day. While Swapnil Asnodkar and Rohit Asnodkar were sent back for naught by Ravi Kiran, Sagun Kamat’s 97 off 215 held the innings together. At the end of day’s play, S Bandekar was batting on 22 with Shadab Jakati on eight.

Services vs Tripura: Services were trailing by 420 runs with 10 wickets in hand in the first innings at stumps. Tripura were bowled out for 430 earlier in the day after resuming play on 267/5. When play ended on Tuesday evening, Services’ Pratik Desai was batting on 10 while S Chatterjee was yet to open his account.
