Injury-hit Rohit Sharma to miss Champions League T20

If playing the qualifying round for Mumbai Indians wasn’t enough, the defending champions received another jolt as their skipper Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the Champions League T20 because of multiple injuries, according to ESPN Cricinfo.

Sharma has been Mumbai’s mainstay in past few seasons and also led them to the Indian Premier League and Champions League titles in 2013. The stylish right-hander is also the leading run-getter for the Mumbai-based franchise.

The Mumbai batsman sustained a finger injury during India’s tour of England and during his recent visit to the National Cricket Academy he was also diagnosed a shoulder problem. Sharma has been advised to take at least a four-week break from competitive cricket.

West Indies are scheduled to tour India for playing a full-fledged series, featuring one T20 international, five ODIs and three Test matches. Rohit, who will start his rehabilitation this week, is in a race against time to fit for the tour, starting October 8.

Meanwhile, Mumbai will have to name skipper for the forthcoming competition, starting September 13. Harbhajan Singh and West Indies’ Kieron Pollard are in fray to lead the reigning champions in the T20 tournament, in the absence of Sharma.
