Chennai recently faced the brunt of cyclone Vardah, which swept across the city. The city, however, is set to host the 5th Test between India and England. The 5th and the last match of the series will start this Friday.

The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association confirmed that the cyclone did damage some parts of the stadium. They are working to get the stadium ready on time. However, pitch and outfield of the stadium remain unaffected.

“There is a lot of work to be done, but we are taking it up on a war footing,” Kasi Viswanathan, the secretary of the TNCA, said. “We are confident the match will start on time. The assuring part is that the pitch and the outfield has not been affected by the cyclone.”

“But sightscreen has been damaged. The bulbs have blown off, air conditioners damaged,” he added. “There have been hundreds of tree trunks lying in the road leading up to the stadium. Our challenge is to set everything in order in the next two days. I am confident we will be able to set everything right.”

Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium, meanwhile, will host the match if MA Chidambaram Stadium deemed unfit. Both teams have already landed in the city, whose most parts are still under water.
