BCCI May Face Opposition If Cosmetic Changes Made In Selection Panel

With the 2016 World T20 in mind, if the Indian cricket board (BCCI) decides to retain a few selectors from the current five-member panel headed by Sandeep Patil to achieve continuity, there could be serious resistance from the several state affiliated units opposing the move during the move.

According to the insiders, there is a certain section within the board who believe that if the panel has to be changed, all the members will have to be replaced instead of singling out one or two selectors.

With the current panel completing its term of three years, there is a provision in the BCCI rule book to extend their stay by a year under the extra-ordinary circumstances.

The previous committee — headed by former Indian captain Krish Srikkanth — too got an extension after the Indian team won the 50-over format of the 2011 World Cup at home.

Primarily, the extension then was given to Srikkanth and Co. as a mark of appreciation for their good work. The North Zone selector Yashpal Sharma was the only one from that panel, who didn’t get an extension because he had already completed a four-year term as a selector.

Another stalwart from yesteryears Mohinder Amaranth came in place of Yashpal. Next year (2012), the Patil led committee took over. What is going in favour of the current bunch of selectors?

They are well placed to take a call on who should be selected who shouldn’t picked to represent India for the big T20 championship. So, the board is tempted to make a cosmetic change in the panel — to bring in new faces with fresh ideas.

Already, there are talks that the selector from East Zone, Saba Karim, the former stumper, could be replaced by some other prominent former cricketer from the BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya’s state of Bengal.

Names of Deep Dasgupta and Debang Gandhi are doing the rounds. There are a few suggestions that the Central Zone selector Rajinder Singh Hans can also be replaced.

As reported by Drcricket7 earlier, former Indian captain Dilip Vengsarkar is also in BCCI’s radar to take the hot seat of the chairman of the selection committee and may replace Patil eventually. The other members of the panel are Roger Binny (South) and Vikram Rathour (North).

To this, a very prominent BCCI official maintained: “If the board wants to change a few of the panel members, it may not be acceptable to several state associations in the September AGM. Either they all stay or a new panel takes over.”

Like last time, if the current committee continues to stay at the helm of affairs for another year, their salaries are unlikely to be be revised.
