Just days before facing the Indian team, Zimbabwe have axed head coach Dav Whatmore, and captain Hamilton Mazakadza. Former South Africa pacer Makhaya Ntini will take over the coaching job, while Graeme Cremer has been named the interim captain.

“Head coach Davenell Whatmore has had his contract terminated with immediate effect,” Zimbabwe Cricket said on Tuesday. “Bowling coach Makhaya Ntini has taken over in an acting capacity until the appointment of a substantive head coach.”

“The board has also relieved Zimbabwe top-order batsman Hamilton Masakadza of  the captaincy for all three formats of the game. His deputy, Graeme Cremer, will act in the interim.”

Zimbabwe’s poor performance in the recent times, including the recently concluded World T20, has been cited as the reason of Whatmore’s axing. Whatmore only managed to serve one year of his four-year contract with Zimbabwe. This is the third time in two years that Zimbabwe have changed the coach.

Meanwhile, the African team is preparing to face MS Dhoni’s Indian team, which will be playing a short limited-overs series, starting June 11. The series comprises three one-dayers and as many T20s to be played in Harare.
