In a Big Bash League encounter between Melbourne Stars and Sydney Thunder, Josh Lalor dismissed Cameroon White by clinching a streamer, which has now sparked a debate on the legitimacy of the catch taken by the paceman.

Lalor’s catch was one of the highlights of the match, when the Thunder player, fielding at deep mid-wicket, took a juggling catch in his third attempt. He, however, had to flick the ball from outside the boundary rope into the field to complete the catch.

The Stars managed to win the match, courtesy Kevin Pietersen’s unbeaten fifty, but the questions are raised whether it was a six or not. White was understandably disappointed after caught in the deep and maintained that he hit it for the maximum.

“My understanding of the rule is that was six runs,” White said. “The last point of contact made when he had the ball was outside the field of play. So when he throws it up, my understanding is he has to actually come back into the field of play, touch the field and then touch the ball.”

However, according to the latest amendments made to the rules the catch was completely legal. The third umpire was right in giving White out according to the Law 32, 3e.

Law 32, 3e covers such instances: A fair catch is where a fielder catches the ball after it has crossed the boundary in the air, provided that after being struck by the bat, the first contact with the ball is by a fielder, not touching or grounded beyond the boundary, who has some part of his person grounded within the boundary or whose final contact with the ground before touching the ball was entirely within the boundary.
