Sri Lanka would struggle against India: Sanath Jayasuriya

Both India and Sri Lanka are going through a transformation phase, with some keys players retiring. Although, it is tough for both teams, Sri Lanka great feels the hosts would suffer most owing to the transition.

Former Sri Lanka skipper Sanath Jayasuriya said it would be tough for the Islanders against India, which after their disappointing outing against Pakistan lately. Sanath Jayasuriya added the retirement of key players have taken a toll on overall balance of the side.

“We didn’t do well against Pakistan and it was very disappointing overall,” Sanath Jayasuriya said. “At the moment, you have to understand that Sri Lanka is going through a bit of a lean period after the retirement of most of our senior cricketers – Sangakkara, Mahela and Dilshan.”

Jayasuriya said India is a good side and it would be tough for the Lankan Lions to get the better of the Indian cricket team, led by Virat Kohli in the Test series.

The former captain, however, added that at home Sri Lanka are a good side as they know the conditions well and can capitalise on it.

“It’s going to be tough for us for India plays good cricket and it is playing well at the moment,” Sanath Jayasuriya said. “But in our conditions, our players are also good.”

The Indian team has arrived in the island nation. The Indian cricket team will play a warm-up match at the R Premadasa Stadium, starting August 6.

The first Test of the series in Galle will commence from August 12, followed by the second and third at the Tamil Union Oval and SSC Colombo, respectively.

After three matches, the Indian cricket team will return home on September 2, Wednesday.
