Ranji Trophy Round-up: Varun Sood and Gagandeep star on Day 4

Varun Sood wrecked the Gujarat batting lineup by claiming four wickets in the first innings and five in the second to put Delhi in a commanding position while Baroda’s Gagandeep Singh helped enforce follow-on on Madhya Pradesh.

S Badrinath (152*) put Vidarbha in a commanding position against Rajasthan while Mumbai are in the driver’s seat at the Eden Gardens. Deepak Behera claimed a four-for to help set-up the match for Odisha in Lahli in the fourth round of Ranji Trophy 2014-15.

Bengal vs Mumbai: Asked to follow-on, hosts Bengal were trailing by 75 runs with all wickets intact. Earlier, resuming on 130 for six, the home team were bowled out for 210. Kshemal Waingankar bowled SS Banerjee and Veerpratap Singh while Iqbal Abdulla sent back Ashoke Dinda and Wilkin Mota accounted for Abhimanyu Easwaran (85) to end Bengal’s innings. Although the hosts put up a better performance in the second innings at the Eden Gardens and were 129/0 at stumps they have conceded a first innings lead.

Madhya Pradesh v Baroda: Baroda’s Gagandeep Singh claimed 5/41 to help wrap-up MP for 178 on Day 3 and enforce a follow-on. He was complemented in the effort by SS Mangalorkar, who picked three while Munaf Patel took two wickets. At stumps, MP were 41/1 and trailed by 139 runs.

Tamil Nadu vs Railways: In reply to TN’s 213 in the first innings, Railways were trailing by 80 runs in the first innings with four wickets in hand at stumps on Day 3. Ashish Yadav claimed 6/68 to bowl TN out earlier in the day. Hosts’ bowler Aushik Srinivas claimed two early wickets to leave the visitors on 3/2 at Chepauk. At the end of day’s play, Railways were 133/6.

Uttar Pradesh vs J&K: Play could not take place in Kanpur on the third day.

Delhi vs Gujarat: Asked to follow-on Gujarat were trailing by 123 runs with three wickets in hand. Resuming their first innings on 34/1, the visitors were bowled out for 150 by Delhi and asked to follow-on. Varun Sood claimed four wickets while Shivam Sharma picked two, Parvinder Awana, Sumit Narwal, N Saini and Rajat Bhatia took a wicket each. Sood then claimed five and wrecked Gujarat’s second innings while Sharma added two more to his match tally to leave the visitors reeling on 152/7.

Haryana vs Odisha: Having taken a first innings lead, Odisha declared their innings on the overnight score of 232/9. The Deepak Behera-led attack then bowled Haryana out for 143 to set-up the game in the visitors’ favour. He claimed 4/22 while Basant Mohanty claimed three, S Pradhan accounted for two and B Samantray picked one wicket. At stumps Odisha were 8/1 and needed 31 runs to win.

Rajasthan vs Vidarbha: Having bowled Rajasthan out for 188 in the first innings on Day 2, Vidarbha had seized a 108-run lead. Building on it they made 296/4 before declaring their innings. Although they lost both openers with just 19 runs on the board they were powered by S Badrinath who made 152 not out to help set Rajasthan a 408-run target and set-up the game in visitors’ favour. R Thakur then claimed Rajasthan’s opener R Saraf in the fourth over. At stumps Rajasthan were 33/1 with Vineet Saxena and Robin Bist in the middle. At the end of day’s play Rajasthan needed 372 runs with a day remaining in the game.

Saurashtra vs Punjab: Playing at their home venue, Saurashtra were trailing by 351 runs with 6 wickets in hand in the first innings at stumps on Day 3. Sagar Jogiyani led the hosts reply and had scored 145 until he was sent back by Maninder Singh. At the end of day’s play, Saurashtra were 308/4 with Sheldon Jackson (7*) and Kamlesh Makvana at the crease (1*).

Assam vs Himachal Pradesh: Bowled out for 218 in the first innings on the pen-ultimate day of the ongoing match, Assam were 331 runs short of the HP’s mammoth first innings score. Resuming on 18 without loss, the home team’s line up caved in to HP. Vikramjeet Malik gave the visitors their first breakthrough with the wicket of Dheeraj Jadhav while Rishi Dhawan sent back PP Das 78 runs later. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals after that. Malik, Bipul Sharma and Ankush Bedi claimed two wickets each Karanveer Singh claimed 3/28 to wrap-up the hosts’ innings.

Hyderabad vs Services: Resuming on 210/3, Hyderabad seized a first innings lead before being bowled out for 338 on the third day. At stumps, Services were 96/4 in their second innings and led by 64 runs.

Jharkhand vs Kerala: Kerala took a narrow first innings lead before being bowled out for 383 earlier in the day. Monish Kareparambil unbeaten 75 and Raiphi Vincent Gomez’s 76 helped the team claim a lead after Kerala resumed their innings on 179/5 on the third day. At the end of day’s play Jharkhand were 68/1 and lead by 22 runs.

Tripura vs Goa: Resuming their first innings on 139/5, Tripura had taken a narrow first innings lead before being bowled out for 265 on Day 3. At the end of day’s play, Goa were 123/5 and lead by 109 runs. Rahul Keni and Deepraj Gaonkar were batting on 20 and 25 respectively when play ended for the day. Tripura’s A Sarkar claimed two of the five wickets that fell while MB Murasingh and Rana Dutta picked a wicket each.
