Ranji Trophy Round-up: Sanju Samson, KL Rahul amongst century makers

Saurabh Tiwary scored an unbeaten ton against Goa, Sanju Samson’s 143 not out lifted Kerala to a respectable total against Services while Lokesh Rahul scored 150* for Karnataka against UP. Centurions H Rana and N Saini revived Haryana against Team Rajasthan after losing the top-order early, while HP’s Paras Dogra (106*) too was amongst century makers on the first day of the eighth round of the Ranji Trophy 2014-15 season. Odisha’s Basant Mohanty and Deepak Behera claimed four wickets each to bundle Punjab out. Assam’s S Purkayastha (3/35) was again amongst wickets and helped bowl AP out along with AK Das (4/24). Here are the highlights of the day:

Baroda vs Mumbai: Half-century by opener Shrideep Mangela and 67 not out by captain Aditya Tare took Mumbai to 218/6 at stumps against Baroda on the first day. Coming to bat at No 4, the newly appointed Mumbai skipper was batting with Shardul Thakur when play ended for the day. Munaf Patel claimed two wickets while Irfan Pathan, Yusuf Pathan, Swapnil Singh and B Bhatt picked a wicket each.

Bengal vs Railways: Electing to bat first at the Eden Gardens, Bengal posted 268 on the first day before being bowled out at the stroke of stumps. Railways’ paceman Anureet Singh claimed 4/45 while Karn Sharma and Arnab Nandi claimed two wickets each to bowl the hosts out. Bengal’s middle-order bat Manoj Tiwary made 68 while Shreevats Goswami scored 62 to take the team to a decent total even as the rest of the middle-order caved in.

Jammu & Kashmir vs Madhya Pradesh: MP were 271/4 at stumps after electing to bat in Indore. Jalaj Saxena (89) and Naman Ojha (85) helped rebuild the innings after being left on 26/2. At the end of day’s play, Devendra Bundela was batting on 62 with Harpreet Singh on 13.

Karnataka vs Uttar Pradesh: Lokesh Rahul’s 150* propelled Karnataka to 326/4 on the first day against UP. The opener was batting with Shreyas Gopal (88*) at stumps.

Gujarat vs Maharashtra: Gujarat were 277/7 at stumps in Valsad against Maharashtra on Thursday evening. Venugopal Rao scored 104 even as wickets fell at regular intervals for the hosts to keep the team in the fray. Samad Fallah and Anupam Sanklecha claimed two and three wickets respectively while Akshay Darekar and Chirag Khurana took a wicket each. At stumps, Rush Kalaria was batting with Mehul Patel.

Haryana vs Team Rajasthan: Electing to field first, Team Rajasthan had left Haryana reeling on 29/3 until H Rana and N Saini forged an alliance to propel the hosts to 339/7 on the first day. AV Choudhary sent back S Rohilla and S Singh in the second over while Pankaj Singh claimed R Dewan a while later. However, H Rana (149) and Saini (100) added 205 for the fourth wicket until the former was sent back. At stumps, A Mishra was at the crease with K Hooda.

Punjab vs Odisha: Odisha were trailing by 113 runs with nine wickets in hand after bowling Punjab out for 167 earlier in the day. Basant Mohanty and Deepak Behera claimed four wickets each to bundle the hosts in Mohali. MS Gony’s 51 lower down the order was the top score for the hosts in the innings. At stumps, the visitors were 54/1 with G Rout and Govind Podder in the middle.

Vidarbha vs Delhi: 119 not out by Ganesh Satish on the first day helped Vidarbha to 274/6 at stumps in Nagpur. Opting to bat, the hosts were soon left reeling on 46/3 by Manan Sharma. But Shalabh Shrivastava joined Satish in steadying the innings and took the team to 168 before returning to the pavilion. Even as he lost partners at regular intervals, Satish anchored the innings and had taken the hosts to a respectable position at the end of day’s play. He was batting with UR Patel when play ended for the day.

Assam vs Andhra Pradesh: Assam were trailing by 105 runs with nine wickets in hand after skittling Andhra out for 137 earlier in the day. AK Das (4/24) and S Purkayastha (3/35) ran through the opposition to put the table-toppers in commanding position. Mohammad Kaif’s 60 was the higest score for AP in their first innings. At stumps, KB Arun Karthik was batting on 11 with S Roy.

Goa vs Jharkhand: A century by Saurabh Tiwary helped Jharkhand to 229/2 at stumps against the hosts after electing to bat. At the end of day’s play, the middle-order bat was batting on 100 with SP Gautam on 72 in Goa.

Himachal Pradesh vs Tripura: Paras Dogra’s 106 not out took HP to 314/4 on the first day against Tripura. The batsman was batting with Rishi Dhawan (64) at the end of day’s play.

Kerala vs Services: 143 not out by Sanju Samson despite little support from the other end lifted Kerala to 273/4 on Day 1 against Services. Kerala were struggling on 48/2 when Amit Verma joined Sanju Samson in taking the team to 140. Suraj Yadav who ended the partnership by accounting for Verma followed up with the wicket of Sachin Baby 18 runs later. Rohan Prem then joined the top-order bat in seeing the team through to end of day’s play. Prem was batting on 42 with Sanju Samson when play ended for the day
