Ranji Trophy Round-up: Rahil Shah and Jayant Yadav claim seven-wicket hauls

TN’s Rahil Shah claimed 7/34 to bundle out Mumbai while, Haryana’s Jayant Yadav claimed 7/62 to bowl Saurashtra out for 238 while Gujarat’s Ramesh Powar claimed a fifer against Vidarbha. Assam’s Sarupam Purkayastha continued to be amongst wickets and claimed a fifer against Goa.

Deepak Hooda took Baroda to a respectable position with a stoic 142 even as wickets fell at regular intervals against Karnataka and Maharashtra’s Swapnil Gugale made 174 against Delhi. Here are the highlights of the first day of the seventh round of the Ranji Trophy 2014-15 season:

Jammu & Kashmir vs Railways: With only 23 overs of play possible at the Karnail Singh Stadium in Delhi, Railways were 50/1 at stumps on the first day. While Amit Paunikar was run out for three, N Bhille and R Bhosale were batting on 22 and 24 respectively at the end of day’s play.

Karnataka vs Baroda: Lifted by Deepak Hooda’s 142, Baroda were 320/8 at stumps after electing to bat in Mysore. Abhimnayu Mithun and Ronit More, who claimed three and two wickets respectively during the day were responsible for pushing the visitors on the back foot early on, leaving them on 52/4 in the 24th over until Hooda revived the innings. The middle-order bat was sent back Mithun towards the fag end of the day. Swapnil Singh was batting on 28 with Gagandeep on five at the end of day’s play.

Tamil Nadu vs Mumbai: Having bowled Mumbai out for 141, TN were trailing by five runs with six wickets in hand in the first innings at the end of day’s play. Rahil Shah ran through the batting line-up with precision after the visitors elected to bat at Chepauk. On a turning track, the spinner claimed 7/34 to skittle the opposition out for 141 earlier in the day.

Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur then gave the visitors their first breakthrough with the wicket of Abhinav Mukund while Akshay Girap accounted for Murali Vijay a while later. Akhil Herwadkar dealt a double blow towards the end of day’s play with the wickets of Dinesh Karthik and Aushik Srinivas. At stumps, V Shankar was batting on 47 while Baba Aparajith is yet to open his account.

Uttar Pradesh vs Bengal: Asked to bat in Ghaziabad, Bengal were 141/4 in 57 overs at stumps on the first day. Amit Mishra claimed A Easwaran with 11 runs on the board while Kuldeep Yadav claimed Arindam Das and Manoj Tiwary later. The youngster also ran out Sudip Chatterjee for 60 to leave the visitors on 127/4. At the end of day’s play, Wriddhiman Saha was batting on 45 with LR Shukla on five.

Gujarat vs Vidarbha: Electing to bat first in Surat, Ramesh Powar helped bowl Vidarbha out for 236 on the first day. While the veteran spinner claimed 5/87 to wrap-up the opposition on the first day, visitors’ middle-order bat Shalabh Shrivastava was stranded on 95. At stumps, Gujarat were 39 without loss.

Maharashtra v Delhi: With a 174-run knock in Pune, opener Swapnil Gugale helped Maharashtra to 312/6 on the first day after being put in to bat. At stumps, Chirag Khurana was batting on 55 with Shrikant Mundhe on 16.

Odisha v Team Rajasthan: After Abhilash Mallick opted to field, Basant Mohanty claimed opener PI Sharma to leave Team Rajasthan on 2/1 in the third over. The pacer along with Deepak Behera claimed four top-order wickets to leave the opposition on 65/4. And 20 runs later Govind Podder ran out PR Yadav to add to Team Rajasthan’s batting woes. At stumps the Pankaj Singh-led side were 191/5 with opener Vineet Saxena batting on 87 and C Bist on 51.

Saurashtra v Haryana: Haryana were trailing by 164 runs with seven wickets in hand at the end of first day’s play in Rajkot. Jayant Yadav claimed 7/62 to help bowl the Jaydev Shah-led side out for 238 earlier in the day. Chirag Jani remained unbeaten on 54 as the when the hosts was wrapped-up in 59.1 overs. With Kamlesh Makvana claiming two and D Jadeja picking a wicket, the visitors were 74/3 at stumps. R Dewan was batting on 35 with Yadav on 17 when play ended for the day.

Himachal Pradesh vs Andhra Pradesh: Asked to bat in Dharamsala, Andhra were 123/2 at the end of day’s play with only 34 overs being bowled on Day 1. Rishi Dhawan claimed both the openers. At close of play, M Sriram was batting on 45 with Mohammad Kaif on 1.

Goa vs Assam: After bowling Assam to victory in the previous round, Sarupam Purkayastha claimed 5/69 to bundle Goa out for 175 on the first day. In reply, Assam were 69/1 and trailing by 106 runs at stumps

Jharkhand vs Hyderabad: Jharkhand were 295/4 at stumps after electing to bat against Hyderabad in Ranchi. Middle-order batsman Saurabh Tiwary scored a century to help the hosts to a respectable position on the first day. At the end of day’s play, Ishank Jaggi was batting on 58 with R Singh on five.

Tripura vs Kerala: The Niyas Nizar-led Kerala attack left Tripura struggling on 127/6 on Day 1 in Agartala. The bowler claimed 3/25 while Warrier, Kidheesh MD and M Kareparambil picked a wicket each. When play ended for the day, opener B Gosh was batting on 59 with Rana Dutta on 1.
