The Indian cricket board’s (BCCI) decision to continue with a system of releasing those cricketers are who not a part of the playing eleven in a Test match to play the Ranji Trophy matches is indeed a great move.

This system of releasing players started last year during the South African tour at home. At that time a few of the cricketers were released to serve their state teams.

Not many were happy with the system, but BCCI is right in embracing such a move. Though this, the players are match fit 24×7 and whenever they are asked to play a game.

With India schedule to play 13 Test matches at home, there will be games when someone or the other will be injured or will have to sit out due to a lack of form – the performance in the Ranji games – would be a perfect yardstick to make a judgement.

There are criticism about the selectors not picking a single cricketers from the Duleep Trophy for the New Zealand series. Some good performances from the likes of Gautam Gambhir, Mayank Agarwal and Kuldeep Yadav.

But this is just the beginning of the season. None should think that it’s end of the road for the performers.

The team management may have opted for the known faces in the team, but those who will continue to perform will surely get a look it. At least, indian coach Anil Kumble made it clear during s few informal meeting with the board.

The bench strength should be good and those who are consistent at the domestic level would be rewarded sooner or later. The India team management has also discussed on how age won’t be a factor in team selection.

If a senior cricketer like Gautam Gambhir could score runs, there won’t be any discrimination against him. The performers will always get the the preference.
