The Windies Cricket Board has named Carlos Brathwaite as the new T20 captain for the upcoming T20 series against India. The two-match series is slated to take place in Florida, USA on August 27 and August 28.

Brathwaite was instrumental in West Indies’ T20 final win over England. He received a hefty paycheck in the Indian Premier League. And, is regarded among the prolific allrounders in world cricket at the moment.

Meanwhile, Darren Sammy has been axed from the 14-member squad. He led the Windies team to two World T20 titles, including the recent one in India. He, however, hasn’t made any contribution with bat and ball.

“The selection panel has expressed its thanks to former captain, Daren Sammy. For his leadership of that format of the game for the two World Championship titles in 2012 and earlier this year,” a press release stated.

Denesh Ramdin, Jerome Taylor, Sulieman Benn and Ashley Nurse are also not named in the squad. Sunil Narine and Kieron Pollard have been recalled. Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo are retained.

West Indies T20 squad: Andre Fletcher, Andre Russell, Carlos Brathwaite (c), Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Evin Lewis, Jason Holder, Johnson Charles, Kieron Pollard, Lendl Simmons, Marlon Samuels, Samuel Badree and Sunil Narine.
