The much talked about Wankhede’s flat pitch fiasco that was made one of the reasons for India’s embarrassing defeat against South Africa on Sunday hasn’t found many takers in the Indian cricket board.
According to a source, the BCCI mandarins aren’t blaming the Mumbai pitch solely for India’s loss in the series decider.
“If South Africa could score that many runs, India should have shown the temperament to get close to the winning target or at least the India bowlers should have kept the South African under a check,” a BCCI source told Drcricket7 on Wednesday.
That, however, doesn’t mean that the Wankhede pitch controversy will be swept under the carpet by the BCCI. The board bigwigs are exchanging phone calls and emails to tackle the pitch controversy that erupted after an unpleasant exchange between Indian team director Ravi Shastri and Sudhir Naik, the Wankhede curator.
“A public spat between the team and the local association shouldn’t happen again at any cost. In fact, the board is taking preventive measures to avoid such a miscommunication in future,” another insider said.
“There was nothing wrong with the pitch as such. Yes, it could have offered some more help for the spinners. If India gave away that many runs to South Africa, they should have got close to the winning target. A better team won the ODI series and it happens in cricket,” the source added.
